More information about the charity ...

It's a fact that 1 in 2 women in the UK will suffer from some kind of reproductive or gynaecological health problem. "Improve Women's Health, Improve the World" was the conclusion of WHO 2009 report "Women and Health". Every penny Wellbeing of Women raises is used to support groundbreaking medical research and the provision of vital health information to women.

Rosalind Wythe set up the local branch of Wellbeing of Women to raise awareness of the charity in October 2000 with her friend, Sara Garnham, they started by inviting friends and work colleagues to events they would enjoy attending themselves and it's grown from there. The shopping evening held in September at L K Bennett was the stores best ever in Cambridge. One of the reasons for setting up the branch was that researchers in Cambridge had received over £2,000,000 in grants from Wellbeing of Women just for ovarian cancer projects alone. Since the branch was launched in 2000 the money raised locally has helped fund more grants all over the Country including 16 new research projects in Cambridge. These projects are trying to improve the statistics below:

  • 1 in 5 pregnancies ends in miscarriage
  • 25% of premature births are caused by Pre-eclampsia
  • 17 babies a day die in the UK at or near birth
  • Every minute, around the globe, 110 women experience pregnancy related complications
  • 150 women a week in the UK die of a gynaecological cancer
  • 2 million women suffer the pain of endometriosis; endometriosis costs the UK an estimated £2.8 billion a year in days taken off work

One of Wellbeing of Women's major research projects is The Baby Bio Bank, this is a very important new research project, which will result in more successful, healthy pregnancies meaning more healthy babies. It is a major new resource dedicated to solving the four main complications of pregnancy: Premature labour; Fetal growth restriction; Pre-eclampsia; and Recurrent Miscarriage. Together, these complications affect at least 82,000 pregnancies a year in the UK. The birth of a baby is one of life's happiest moments but for families affected by serious complications of pregnancy, happiness can turn into tragedy.  In 2009 Wellbeing of Women also invested in five new research projects including one to understand and better treat hot flushes and another to determine the safety of steroid creams when used by pregnant women. In September each year the Healthy Woman campaign helps women everywhere enjoy better health.
